Windows 7 upgrade fail

When we unlock the local software repository folder, we can remove it. We can do that either from the command line or from the Windows Explorer. If you want to be careful, you can first rename the target folder and later delete it. We will now start the Windows Update service again. We can leave the system to check automatically for the updates or we can manually run the update process. Be patient when you start the update process.

This phase can last from just a couple of minutes to maybe 15 minutes or more. That depends on the link speed and the computer load. Try to stop all other running applications and not to use the Internet during this phase. However, if you still have after 15 minutes a high load on the one CPU core and the Windows Update process is still in the checking phase, you should consider to going on to the next step. I found that there are two updates that we should manually download and install.

I downloaded both updates on both laptops. However, I solved one laptop in the time. This is the best approach. We avoid to messing anything up. Moreover, you should take the notes about the steps you have completed. This is right moment to mention this. The first laptop is with the Windows Thin PC operating system. This is actually the Windows 7 Embedded Standard operating system. The second one is with the Windows 7 Enterprise x Therefore, we should choose an appropriate update from the list.

I ran the procedure to stop the Windows Update service. Then I manually ran this update. You need to confirm that you want to install this update. In case of my second laptop, this update already existed, so I skipped this step. We need to reboot the computer after successfully installing of the update. After rebooting I downloaded and manually installed the second update.

My opinion is that you can skip this first update and go directly to the installation of the second update. You should always look for the latest Update Rollup package. That means that we will manually update the Windows Update service client.

When, for any reason, we have outdated version of the Windows Update client, we can fix that with this update.

You should perform the installation of this Rollup Update now. Then again reboot your computer. After rebooting you can wait for either the Windows Update service to automatically run on schedule or run manually the Windows Update process.

After several minutes we should see a balloon above the system tray with the message that the new updates are available. We need to wait a little longer and voila! The actual number of the updates can vary between the computers. That depends on the number of the Microsoft products you have and how often you updated your computer. And you are updating it on regular basis, right? We will run the update process. It will take some time to download and install all listed updates.

Then the all time classic error message that just never gets old: "Windows setup experienced an unexpected error. To install windows restart the installation" My hunch at this stage after reading several similar type issue threads is that the problem or problems are related to the location of the MBR. I don't know enough to mess around with this stuff so would appreciate some assistance from anybody that knows what in insert deity here name is going on.

NEW: Just attached the setupact and setuperr log files for this machine to my docs in skydrive using windows live ID. I also noticed while looking around that windows thought I had three additional drives, when I clicked on one it said I needed to format which I cancelled.

Went to windows automatic update and accepted SP2 to see if it helped any. Installed SP2 and restarted, message appeared saying install failed and restoring previous settings. Machine hung up on restart had to cold start as even Ctl,Alt, Del wouldn't invoke task manager.

When I did get machine up and running the appearance of the bottom task bar has a hazy look to it and the main start round icon appears to have another icon behind it but it has no exact shape or form to it.

This is starting to get really weird and I haven't even installed anything new or different yet. It may be time to ditch the glazing and focus on using the Suse option. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome as I have no idea what to do from here.

Edit: Removed back up issue and reposted in Backup and recovery forum, updated Title of issue to "Windows 7 upgrade fail". If you have only few fails, compare them with successfull, do they have any special or other installations which other computers do not have.

Please remember to mark my post as an answer, if I really helped you out, or vote if usefull. Thank you! It's for a few other models of Optiplex as well, probably all just as old but they work fine when upgrading to Windows 10 manually.

The only compatibility issue when running the compat scan and in the compatData. There's no AV or VPN software on the machines but I am going to try and remove every single piece of software from a test machine and try. The upgrade is stuck at 'Running action: Upgrade Windows' the window also mentions 'Upgrade OS' as well, it will sit at this screen for days.

If I hit confirm, the upgrade proceeds and completes. I'm not sure if the compatibility issue describe above is behind the scenes causing the upgrade to stall as there is no option to force it to continue.

Can I please have some assistance or point me in the right direction, I cant find any references to the graphics issue in any of the logs while the task is running. Thanks Andrew - I think you are right about why its not more prominent online. I wish we weren't doing in-place upgrades.

But we just dont have enough spare laptops to move people across to. I'm trying to manually uninstall, remove and delete the driver first as a test before looking at automating that process. Should it be as simple as:. I tried the script but im block on the delete part. Return : Failde to remove the driver package.
